The Rutgers University Student Life Department coordinates the development and implementation of programs that assist new students in making a successful academic, intellectual and social transition into the University community.  Objectives of New Student Orientation include:

  • Assisting students in the transition from high school to college.
  • Introducing new students to the community standards.
  • Fostering University pride and community spirit and values.
  • Introducing students to involvement and leadership opportunities.

The Orientation Staff consists of four Student Coordinators, four Orientation Team Leaders, approximately 40 Orientation Leaders, and four Program Assistants.  All members are a vital component of the Orientation Staff team.

Important Dates

In order to apply to be an Orientation Leader or Program Assistant, you must attend one information session.

The 2010 Summer Orientation Program runs from June through mid August.

 

Job Requirements & Time Commitments

(All are mandatory – no exceptions)

  • Attendance at an Orientation staff retreat from January 29th-January 31st.
  • Attendance at all Orientation training courses during the spring of 2010 semester.  These are scheduled on Wednesday mornings from 10:20am-11:40am and will be in the Busch Campus Center or Livingston Student Center
  • Orientation Leaders and Program Assistants are expected to make an approximate 3 hour-a-week commitment to Orientation activities during the 2010 spring semester.  An hour-and-a-half will be spent in the training course on Wednesday mornings.  The remaining time should be spent on completing readings, group work, and course preparation
  • Two NSO In-service Days:  Sunday February 21, 2010 and Saturday April 10, 2010
  • Assistance during Rutgers University Open Houses - TBA
  • Attendance at APA Days during the 2010 spring semester - TBA 
  • Attendance at an intensive week-long training in June
  • A full-time commitment during the 2010 Summer Orientation program, from June  to August
  • Participation in Scarlet Knight Days in fall semester 2010
  • Orientation Leaders CANNOT take classes during the summer and most Orientation Leaders find it difficult to have another job during the summer.
